Ashley McBryde Reveals Vocal Cord Injury That Will Keep Her Silent for Days

Ashley McBryde, seen in a past interview setting, opens up about her recent vocal cord injury that will keep her silent for days while she works to keep her tour dates on track.

Ashley McBryde is the kind of country artist who’s more likely to blow her voice hollering at a bonfire than babying it in a green room, but right now she doesn’t have a choice. Doctor’s orders say zip it.

On August 6, McBryde broke the news to her fans in true Ashley fashion, not some long-winded PR statement but a scrappy Instagram video holding up handwritten notes because she literally can’t talk. “Hi guys! So… I hurt my throat,” one card read. “So, NO TALKING if I want to be able to sing to you.”

For most people, that’s just an excuse to binge Netflix and avoid phone calls. For someone who makes a living belting her heart out night after night, it’s basically a prison sentence. McBryde knows it too, which is why she’s finding a way to keep meeting fans without torching what’s left of her vocal cords. She even suggested folks use ASL to say hello, joke around, and keep the meet-and-greets rolling.

The caption under her video was classic McBryde: “Trybe, doc says I’m working on busted up vocal cords. The last thing I wanna do is cancel any meet greets or Heaven forbid SHOWS. So let’s try this for this week!”

Her schedule this month is stacked. She’s got shows running straight through until mid-December, wrapping with her Redemption Residency at Chief’s, Eric Church’s Nashville bar. Canceling even a handful of those dates would be brutal, not just for the fans but for an artist who’d rather crawl on stage than bow out.

And if you think she’s taking the quiet time to sulk, you don’t know Ashley McBryde. She made the whole announcement feel like a hang with friends, mixing in humor with the bad news and signing along with someone reading her notes out loud. It’s the kind of thing that makes her fans dig in even harder.

Her crew of diehards, the “Trybe,” wasted no time flooding her comments with encouragement: “Do what the doc says & get better,” “We’ll be here when you’re ready,” and one that probably sums it up best: “Don’t worry about us. Fix your damn voice.”

McBryde’s been riding high lately, too. She just dropped her single “Rattlesnake Preacher” in June, a gritty, kick-the-door-down track that feels even more fitting now that she’s been temporarily muzzled. Two days before her vocal rest announcement, she posted about The Redemption Residency, telling fans it’s something she’s been dreaming about for years. That’s why this timing hits like a sucker punch. Momentum like that is hard-earned, and it’s clear she’s doing everything possible not to let it slip.

This isn’t her first time being candid with fans either. McBryde’s always been open about the highs, lows, and everything in between. Back in 2019, she admitted she damn near lost it when Reba McEntire snuck up on her mid-interview to say she was a fan. If you’ve ever heard Ashley talk about her heroes, you know she’s the real deal when it comes to respecting country’s roots.

Right now, though, the respect she’s showing is for her own instrument. Busted vocal cords aren’t something you push through unless you want to make a bad situation worse, and McBryde’s playing it smart. That probably kills her more than the silence itself.

So for the next several days, the woman behind “One Night Standards” is grounded, at least in the talking department. But if history’s any clue, when she gets the green light, she won’t tiptoe back onto the stage. She’ll come out swinging, making up for every single word she couldn’t say.

Until then, the Trybe’s just gonna have to get used to the quiet… and maybe brush up on their sign language.
