10 Female Country Stars Who Have Won Entertainer of the Year at the ACMs

The ACM Entertainer of the Year award is the peak of recognition in country music. For decades, it was a mountain few women were allowed to climb. While male names dominated most of the early ballots, a handful of bold, unshakable women not only earned their place at the top but redefined what it meant to command a stage, a tour, and an audience.

From legends like Loretta Lynn to today’s powerhouse Lainey Wilson, here’s a tribute to the ten women who stood tall and took home the Academy of Country Music’s highest honor — and the legends they beat to do it.

1. Loretta Lynn

In 1976, Loretta Lynn became the first woman in ACM history to win Entertainer of the Year. She had already set the precedent at the CMA Awards four years prior, but this was a different room and a different crowd. Her win came at the 11th ACM Awards, where she beat out country giants like Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, John Denver, and Mickey Gilley. Lynn had released 26 solo studio albums at the time and was riding high off her collaboration with Conway Twitty. She wasn’t just a star — she was the blueprint.

2. Dolly Parton

By the spring of 1978, Dolly Parton was in a league of her own. Riding the crossover success of her album Here You Come Again, she walked away with Entertainer of the Year at the ACMs after eclipsing artists like Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers, Mel Tillis, and Ronnie Milsap. That album was her first platinum seller and solidified her ability to bridge country and pop in a way nobody else had done before, with glamor, grit, and a wink that could steal the spotlight.

3. Barbara Mandrell

Barbara Mandrell didn’t just win the crowd — she owned it. By the time she won ACM Entertainer of the Year in 1981, she had already snagged the CMA version the year before. That year, she beat out Alabama, Kenny Rogers, George Jones, and the Charlie Daniels Band. Her blend of musicianship (she played multiple instruments live), television exposure, and crowd-pleasing hits like “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” made her a force few could match.

4. Reba McEntire

Reba earned her ACM Entertainer of the Year trophy in 1995, after more than a decade of climbing through the ranks. That year, she came out ahead of Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, and Garth Brooks — a massive feat considering Garth was still considered the king of the ’90s arena era. Reba’s tour power, her TV crossover success, and her vocal command turned her into not just an entertainer but a country empire.

5. Shania Twain

By the time Shania Twain won Entertainer of the Year at the ACMs in 2000, she had already changed the game. “Come On Over” and “Up!” made her a global star, and her award that year was well-earned as she edged out Garth Brooks, George Strait, The Chicks, and Tim McGraw. Her pop crossover appeal, high-octane stage shows, and fashion-forward persona made her a once-in-a-generation presence.

6. The Chicks

In 2001, The Chicks (then Dixie Chicks) won Entertainer of the Year at the ACMs after beating Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, and George Strait. Albums like Wide Open Spaces and Fly weren’t just commercially successful — they were critical powerhouses that reshaped what a country group could sound like. Their harmonies were sweet, but their message was strong, and they brought a whole new generation into the genre.

7. Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood may have come from American Idol, but quickly proved she belonged to country music. Her first Entertainer of the Year win at the ACMs came in 2009, when she beat out Brad Paisley, George Strait, Keith Urban, and Kenny Chesney. She repeated the win in 2010, triumphing over the same crew. In 2020, she shared the honor with Thomas Rhett, making her the only woman to win it three times. From powerhouse ballads to spectacle-filled tours, Carrie showed that no stage was too big and no note too high.

8. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift made waves when she won ACM Entertainer of the Year back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. She beat Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, and Kenny Chesney in those years. Swift was still straddling her country-pop edge at the time, touring stadiums and releasing deeply personal songs that hit both the heart and the charts. While she eventually moved full-time into pop, she left a major mark as one of the most commercially successful and youngest ACM Entertainers of the Year ever.

9. Miranda Lambert

It took nearly two decades, but in 2022, Miranda Lambert finally claimed the ACM Entertainer of the Year award. Her win came after years of near misses, but the timing was perfect. That year, she beat out Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, Eric Church, and Carrie Underwood. Her work on The Marfa Tapes, her holiday project with the Pistol Annies, and her headlining tour proved that artistry and authenticity could still win. It wasn’t a commercial juggernaut that earned her the title — it was her staying power and her artistic grit.

10. Lainey Wilson

Lainey Wilson’s meteoric rise led her to win the ACM’s top prize in 2024, just a year after taking home the New Female Artist of the Year trophy. Her competition was fierce — including Morgan Wallen, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, and Kane Brown — but Wilson’s relentless touring, genre-blending sound, and grassroots connection to fans pushed her ahead. With her performance on the ACM stage, she made it clear she wasn’t the future of country — she was already the moment.
