Sometimes even the ride to jail turns into a headline, especially when Morgan Wallen is in the backseat with a mic’d-up cop and no filter.
The now-infamous chair-throwing incident at Eric Church’s Chief’s bar in downtown Nashville already had Morgan Wallen making national headlines. But newly released police bodycam footage has taken things to another level. Not because of the crime, although throwing a chair off a six-story rooftop is reckless as hell, but because of what Morgan had to say once he was cuffed and on his way downtown.
It was April 2024. Wallen had just tossed furniture from the rooftop. He was arrested and riding to the station while chatting with Officer Lopez. And while the moment could have been tense, Morgan was trying to keep things light. That was when the conversation turned to country music.
After Officer Lopez said Morgan was one of his favorites and mentioned liking Zach Bryan and Josh Turner, Wallen gave props to Josh and admitted he did not really listen to Bryan. So far, so good. Just two guys talking about music.
But then Morgan said something nobody expected.
He told the officer not to play any Chris Young, adding with no hesitation, “Oh hell no, he’s terrible.” Instead, he suggested they put on Hardy or Ernest, who are two of his close friends.
In recently surfaced bodycam video from Morgan Wallen’s 2024 arrest, the Wallen can be heard talking with the responding officer in the back of the patrol car.

Now that is one scorching hot take, especially coming from a guy who sits at the top of the country charts. Morgan might have had a few drinks in his system, but that kind of brutal honesty probably was not meant to be public. Whether it was a joke, a jab, or just some tipsy truth, it was loud and clear. Morgan Wallen is not a fan of Chris Young’s music.
This is surprising because Morgan has never really gone after fellow country artists before. He tends to keep things respectful and low-key when it comes to others in the genre. But not this time. Whether or not Chris Young ever claps back, this moment is already circulating in the country music world.
To be fair, some fans agree with Morgan. Chris Young’s recent releases have not made a splash, and many feel like he traded his traditional roots for a more watered-down pop-country vibe. Still, it is another thing to hear that kind of critique from someone like Morgan Wallen, especially in such a raw, unfiltered moment.
It also shows that when you are one of the biggest names in country music, everything you say can come back around, especially if there is a camera rolling. This time, it was a police bodycam. And even though Morgan was probably not thinking about how that footage would be used, it is now a permanent part of his story.
So no, there will not be a Morgan Wallen and Chris Young duet dropping anytime soon. But fans now know a little more about where Morgan stands when it comes to his fellow country stars. And if you thought the drama ended with the chair, think again.
Chris Young probably wishes the ride to jail had come with a mute button. But with Wallen involved, silence is never part of the story.
