Whenever Luke Combs takes the stage to serenade his audience with his song “Beautiful Crazy”, everyone can’t help but sing along and fall in love. Even before the song’s official release, it already gained viral fan attention via Combs’ live performances of the ballad. No wonder why it has been named Song of the Year at the 2019 CMA Awards.
But did you know that’s not the reason why the song is very special to Combs? It’s actually the simple fact that Combs wrote it for his wife, Nicole Hocking before they even started dating.
Well, Combs absolutely “got me some serious brownie points” right there. But how did these two fall head over heels in love with each other? Let’s dig a little bit more from their beautiful crazy love story.
They Were Fated To Meet
Luke Combs and Nicole Hocking’s love story seems like it has been written in the stars. The two first met in 2016 through mutual friends. They were at a music festival in Florida then and they spotted each other. Hocking invited Luke to come and hang out with her and her friends.
When they came back to Nashville, where they both lived, Combs invited Hocking over for dinner and everything else was pretty much history after that. However, during that time, Combs was still a struggling artist. He had “no publishing deal, no record deal, no booking deal,” Combs told People. “Everybody was like, ‘Yeah, this is never gonna work,’ and so I didn’t have anything when we met.”
But Hocking knew that Combs was the one, she said, “[I knew] pretty close to right away,” she said. “I saw the way he treated me and other people and it was like, ‘My heart is yours forever.’”
Soon enough, Combs proved the critics wrong! He won the Best Artist at the 2018 CMA Awards and became the first solo artist to get five consecutive No. 1s on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart with his debut album’s “She Got the Best of Me,” “One Number Away,” “When It Rains It Pours” and “Hurricane” and of course Luke Combs “Beautiful Crazy” has been dominating every chart.
Following the success of his first album, Combs set off on his Beer Never Broke My Heart tour in January, with Hocking supporting him every step of the way.
Taking Their Relationship to Another Level
Finally, in November 2018, the CMA New Artist of the Year revealed that he proposed to the love of his life. He turned to Instagram to announce the good news along with a photo taken on their Hawaiian vacation – though he had actually popped the question in the kitchen of their new home before their trip.
“She said yes a while ago but this is a much better place to take pictures than the kitchen,” Combs jested. “Can’t wait to spend forever with you! I love you!” To which Hocking replied, “You’re stuck with me forever!! I love you so much, babe.”
Hocking also showed off her new bling on her Instagram Story, captioning the shot, “So in love.”
“I never thought a ring could mean so much to me. I love you Luke Albert Combs, I’m going to marry the hell outta you.”
However, the couple is reported to have been too busy to think about their big day.
“We’re just crazy busy.” The musician PEOPLE in Austin at the 2019 iHeartCountry Festival. “We just haven’t had any time to sit back and be home for more than three or four days. And it’s just a really overwhelming process, doing what we do.”
Since the “She Got the Best of Me” singer’s breakthrough in 2016, the ride has continued into 2019, where Combs has headlined his Beer Never Broke My Heart tour that kicked off in January 2019 and due to overwhelming demand, the singer has added five new dates to the massive road trek.
Combs’ rising star has made planning a walk down the aisle even more difficult.
“Everything that you do is scrutinized or put in the public light, so it can be like: How do we do this?” he says. “I don’t like the word ‘celebrity wedding,’ but how do you get a venue? Me and her would want to go look at the venue and make sure we like it. How do you go there and make sure that people working there aren’t going to say, ‘Hey, these people are getting married here?’”
Despite the challenges, Combs and Hocking are excited about their wedding. “It’s an interesting process, but we’re looking forward to getting into it,” Combs said. “I’m sure we’ll get into it then and get some things done.”
However, during the 2019 CMT Music Awards, Combs gave a hint that it’s going to be one of the days this year. Though the couple is not revealing too many more details about their big day, Combs revealed that they already hired a wedding planner to help them plan their wedding, which is making the experience a lot easier for them.
“We’re actually a lot farther along than I think we both thought we would be with our schedules,” said Combs. “I’m excited about it. I really am. I’m looking forward to that day quite a bit.”
Luke Combs and Nicole Hocking As Fur Parents
In addition to busy careers and schedules, Combs and Hocking’s new roles as puppy parents are consuming their limited downtime. In May 2019, the two officially became dog parents. The pair recently adopted Jojo, a black rescue puppy from the Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in Nashville.
“We are SO happy for little Jojo who went home today with Country Music’s own Luke Combs and his beautiful fiancée, Nicole,” wrote the Tennessee-based nonprofit organization where the pup had been staying.
“Jojo was instantaneously drawn to Luke and looked him deep in the eyes as if to say, ‘Where have you been all my life?’ What a happy ending for a little country dog brought into our rescue,” they added.
After taking home Jojo, Hocking shared two sweet photos with their newest addition to Instagram. The first featured her outside, beaming alongside the pup, while the second captured Combs adorably preparing to bring his new companion home.
“WELCOME TO THE FAMILY, JOJO 🐶💙MY HEART IS SO FULL!!!” she captioned the photos.
Luke Combs Isn’t Just A Talented Musician — He’s Also A Romantic!
Well, the romantic side of Combs is pretty evident in his songs, but it never stopped there. He can’t stop gushing about his wife, both in interviews and in his social media posts. During the 2019 Grammy Awards, Luke Combs’ wife stepped out with the country singer as he received a nomination in the best new artist category,
Ahead of the show, Combs, spoke with PEOPLE TV about his upcoming plans for his then-fiancée for 2019 Valentine’s Day. “Right now, I’ve got a sold-out arena show in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Valentine’s Day so I’m gonna do that,” he explained. “But she will be out on the road, so I’m sure I’ll come up with some kind of Casanova-type thing to try to sweep her off her feet one more time.”
And when Valentine’s Day came, Luke Combs played the game well. He started the celebration one day away and shared sweet thoughts about his then-girlfriend along with a series of photos, even though he admitted she likely wouldn’t like all the pictures he posted.
“Happy Valentines Day to the love of my life [Nicole Hocking],” Combs shared. “I know you’re probably gonna kill me for using some of these photos because they don’t have filters or bomb ass lighting but you don’t need any of that. These pictures remind me of you in so many ways, your natural beauty, your radiant smile, your fun-loving personality, your sense of humor, and how much you love animals just to name a few.”
“I just wanted the world to get a little peek of all the amazing sides of you I get to see every day,” he added. “Thank you for loving me, I don’t know how you do it, but I’m glad you do. I love you SO. MUCH.”
Luke Combs then-fiancée can’t help but write in the comment, “STOP IM CRYIN. I love you so so much.”
Nicole Hocking was on hand to witness Combs’ biggest career achievement to date and she’s been by his side through the ups and downs of fame. We are so excited for these two to journey life together.
