James Cecil Dickens is a famous country music artist named Little Jimmy Dickens. The singer-songwriter was a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1948 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983.

1. He was born in Bolt, West Virginia.

The famous Little Jimmy Dickens was born in Bolt, West Virginia. He was the eldest among 13 siblings, and his loving grandparents raised him. He and his grandparents would spend Saturday nights listening to the Grand Ole Opry on a small radio.

2. His stage name originated from his small stature.

When he joined the Opry around August, he used his nickname, Little Jimmy Dickens, because of his short height. He is around 4’11, but with the right outfit, he can stand up to 5’5. Do you see the difference a correct, stunning, and attention-grabbing wardrobe can make?

3. He performed at different radio stations.

In late 1930, his career started to blossom as he performed on a West Virginia radio station. His performance was also featured on another radio program in 1948, located in Michigan.

Because of his growing career and success in his radio performances, he quit school to travel all over the country to perform more on local radio stations in hopes of more success. He played music on radios under the name Jimmy the Kid.

5. He was the first country musician to do a world tour.

Little Jimmy Dickens significantly impacted country music because of his musical prowess and entertainment skills. These abilities brought smiles to many people, and due to this, Little Jimmy was the first country musician to get his music around the globe on a global tour during the 1960s.

6. His trademarks are his humor-laced music and rhinestone-studded outfits.

The famous country singer is known for his ability to bring laughter to people through a number of his songs. Little Jimmy Dickens’ hit songs include “Take an Old Cold Tater (And Wait,) “We Could,” “The Violet and a Rose,” and “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose,” being his biggest hit ever as it reached the top spot of the country music charts.

7. He made numerous appearances in music videos of his fellow artists.

Little Jimmy Dickens also appeared in some of his fellow country musicians’ music videos. He featured in Hank Williams Jr.’s “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.” He also made surprising cameos in music videos of Brad Paisley, George Jones, and Bill Anderson. Little Jimmy, Brad, George, and Bill were known as the Kung-Pao Buckaroos.

8. He became one of the oldest members of the Grand Ole Opry.

Before Little Jimmy Dickens died on January 2015 of cardiac arrest, he was the oldest member of the Grand Ole Opry. News of his death spread through the industry, and the tragic incident deeply saddened many famous and fellow musicians.

Little Jimmy Dickens might be remembered for his diminutive height. Yet, he has one of the most significant contributions to the country music industry: humor in music that brings smiles to people and lifts them in difficult times.
