In 1976, country legend Kenny Rogers released his version of the hit gospel song “Love Lifted Me” as part of his album of the same title.

Originally released in 1912 by lyricist James Rowe, “Love Lifted Me” was initially known as a hymn that later on became a gospel hit after musician Howard Smith decided to compose the hymn’s melody with Rowe.

As it slowly garnered attention from listeners and churchgoers, the song ultimately became a staple gospel song in religious gatherings and churches. Because of its popularity, many country singers released their version of the song, and among the most notable ones is Kenny Rogers’ 1976 version.

His version is so powerful that it secured a spot on the music charts, landing at no. 19 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard) and no. 25 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks—making it to the list of Kenny Rogers’s amazing hits

But we also need to take into account that, aside from Kenny Rogers’s amazing vocals and overall powerful performance, the song’s soul-touching and eye-opening meaning contributed to its success.

As we explore the timeless, spiritually uplifting meaning of “Love Lifted Me,” we will eventually realize God’s true power.

Meaning Behind the Song

Born sinners, we tend to think that redeeming ourselves from our sins is impossible. However, this song amazingly explains how God can easily lift the burden in our hearts and spirits as long as we seek his help.
