Nigel Max Edge, the man accused of killing three people and injuring at least eight others during a mass shooting in Southport, North Carolina, once appeared on the red carpet at the 2012 CMT Music Awards as Kellie Pickler’s guest.

Authorities say Edge, 40, opened fire from a boat on the outdoor seating area of the American Fish Company bar on Sept. 27 around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses reported chaos as shots rang out from the water. The boat fled up the Intracoastal Waterway, but Coast Guard officials located a man matching the suspect’s description. Edge was detained and later arrested by local police.

He is facing three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. Edge is currently being held without bail.

Long before the shooting, Edge was known publicly by his former name, Sean Debevoise. A decorated Marine veteran, he served from 2003 to 2009 and was awarded the Purple Heart after surviving multiple combat injuries in Iraq. He also received several other honors, including the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with two bronze stars.

Kellie Pickler, who is from North Carolina, first met Debevoise at a local veterans’ charity event. She has long supported the military community, frequently performing at USO tours and raising funds for service members. In 2012, she was unable to attend the Hope for Our Heroes gala because of touring obligations. Instead, she invited Debevoise to attend the CMT Awards in Nashville as her guest, honoring his service by giving him a moment in the spotlight.

That June night, Debevoise walked the red carpet beside Pickler and his service dog, Rusty. He told reporters, “I am ecstatic about being here at the CMT Music Awards with Kellie. She is the most sincere person I know. She is an angel.” At the time, Pickler was married to songwriter Kyle Jacobs, and there was no romantic connection between her and Debevoise. Their public appearance together was framed as a show of support for veterans.

In later years, Edge’s life took a troubling turn. He legally changed his name in 2023 and soon after became involved in unusual legal claims. In February 2025, he filed a lawsuit against Pickler, alleging she had tried to poison him with a glass of whiskey at the 2012 CMT event. The allegation was never substantiated. Edge also filed claims accusing a North Carolina hospital of attempting to kill him, which likewise had no evidence to support them.

The mass shooting in Southport has now drawn national attention, not only because of the violence but also because of Edge’s past connection to a high-profile country star. Police say Edge used an assault rifle during the attack, firing indiscriminately at patrons seated outdoors at the popular waterfront bar. Three victims were killed, and at least eight more were injured. Officials have not yet released the victims’ names pending family notification.

The American Fish Company, where the shooting occurred, is a well-known gathering place in Southport. Locals described the scene as “chaos” as people scrambled for safety when the shots rang out.

Pickler, who lost her husband Kyle Jacobs in 2023, has not publicly commented on Edge’s arrest. She has largely kept a low profile in recent months.

Edge remains in custody without bail. A court date has not yet been set, and investigators continue to work on building their case in what is being described as one of the worst mass shootings to hit coastal North Carolina in years.
