Together with Jimmy Webb, she had re-written the lyrics to tailor fit the band of strong country women who will be singing it.

Carlile was candid about the work she and Webb did in “Highwayman” with Rolling Stone. Webb was the person who originally wrote the song, and helped her re-work the lyrics and infused it “with stories who died in protest.” She spoke a little more about the project as well.

“We are making a four-part documentary and a record.  “I re-wrote the original Highwaymen song with Jimmy Webb, with stories of women who died in protest. We wrote a bunch of country songs, Dave Cobb is producing the record and we are saying, ‘We are country artists,’ and we are going to ask they include us. And if they do or don’t, either way it will tell a story about feminism in rural American music.”

These powerhouses are starting to show the fruits of their labor. Known as The Highwomen, Carlile, Shires, and Morris banned together for an all-star-country supergroup.

They took their name from the infamous country supergroup, The Highwaymen. The group consisted of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.

Morris and Carlile shared some tidbits about the new project in a Rolling Stone interview.

“The whole idea started with Amanda Shires. Like we were basically hanging out and we got to know each other, became fast friends, fell in love, and she said we should start like a political movement.”

Carlile says the direction of the Highwomen’s music will be towards “really classic country.” Their repertoire would include songs from Natalie Hemby, Lori McKenna, and maybe even Miranda Lambert. As for now, their music is highly anticipated and we cannot wait to see more!
