In 2018, American Christian singer Lauren Daigle released her breakout song “You Say” as part of her album Look Up Child.

Upon its release, it immediately landed on the charts, peaking at no. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs Chart. “You Say” became such a radio hit that it also landed the No. 1 spot on the Christian Adult Contemporary radio chart, making it the second-biggest Christian song of 2018.

Aside from landing different music charts, “You Say” also won countless accolades, with the most notable ones being the Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song, Billboard Music Awards for Top Christian Song, and GMA Dove Awards for Song of the Year.

“You Say” was such a hit to many that it eventually won a 6x platinum award by RIAA for selling more than 6,000,000 copies of the album worldwide. But, aside from Lauren Daigle’s angelic voice, the meaning behind the song also got fans hooked.

So, let’s dive into the soulful lyrics of Lauren Daigle’s hit song “You Say.”

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Lauren Daigle with Paul Mabury and Jason Ingram, “You Say” is about having hope and trusting God in times of struggle.

It is a song perfect for those people who are struggling with believing in themselves. It empowers us to have faith and be optimistic in times of doubt.

In an article written by CCM Magazine, Lauren Daigle went on to state that when she was in the process of writing “You Say,” she was feeling conflicted. Lauren herself even started questioning her career in music, asking the question, “I was struggling with insecurity, thinking, ‘Am I doing enough? Am I talented enough? Do I have what it takes?’.” That is why she relates to the song on a far deeper level.

We all have moments in life where we bump into an unknown crossroads that would bring up identity issues. But at the end of the day, as long as we have faith in God and in ourselves, things will eventually fall into their right places.
