Mark Chesnutt was ready to bring that ’90s country fire to Baton Rouge on October 16, where he was scheduled to open for Alabama at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Instead, the 62-year-old legend ended up in a hospital bed.
Venue officials confirmed that the “I Just Wanted You To Know” singer was rushed to a local hospital for medical reasons just hours before he was set to take the stage. While the exact cause has not been released, his band performed in his place, and fans were left stunned and worried.
The timing could not have been more heartbreaking. Chesnutt had only recently returned to touring after facing some of the hardest battles of his life. He has dealt with alcohol addiction and a fractured spine, and he underwent quadruple bypass surgery. The man has taken more hits than most artists who are twice his age. Still, he has fought hard to keep doing what he was born to do, which is sing for country music fans who never stopped loving him.
This most recent medical scare adds to a long stretch of health battles for the Texas native. Last November, he was hospitalized and underwent an evaluation for undisclosed issues. In June 2024, things worsened when he had emergency heart surgery after what he described as a heart health issue. The diagnosis was serious enough that he had to cancel several shows and take a hard look at his life.
But nothing knocked him down quite like his battle with alcohol. During the pandemic, Chesnutt had spinal surgery and was left unable to walk or perform, while dealing with intense chronic pain. That is when the drinking took over. He told American Songwriter that it got so bad his wife had to call an ambulance. Doctors gave him four blood transfusions and told him he had esophageal varices caused by cirrhosis. Multiple organs were failing, and his heart was close to cardiac arrest.
“They basically told me they were gonna get me over this and I was going to be fine,” Chesnutt said. “But if I went home and started drinking again, I might not leave alive.”
That was the wake-up call. He took his last drink on November 1, 2023, and has remained sober ever since.

He launched what he called the Redemption Tour in 2024 and told fans he felt better than he did in his thirties. “I’m excited every night to go onstage,” he said in April. “I have the energy I wish I had throughout the ’90s.”
That energy was supposed to carry him through a busy fall tour, with stops still planned in Indiana, West Virginia, and Ohio. As of now, his team has not confirmed if those dates will be canceled or postponed.
What is clear is that Mark Chesnutt’s body may be tired, but the man still has a fight in him. You do not walk through cirrhosis, heart surgery, addiction, and the loneliness of recovery just to give up in Baton Rouge.
Country music has always been about pain, grit, and truth. Mark Chesnutt has lived all three with nothing held back. The fans who grew up on “Brother Jukebox” and “It’s a Little Too Late” are still pulling for him, not just because he is a hitmaker, but because he is still swinging.
If he gets back on that stage again, it will not be just another show. It will be another miracle.
