American country and gospel singer-songwriter Randy Travis released “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” from his 17th studio album Glory Train: Songs of Faith, Worship, and Praise in 2005. The album contained 19 covers of gospel songs and peaked at the #28 spot on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and #7 on the US Billboard Christian Songs chart.

The 7-time Grammy-Award winner recorded 22 albums, with the first six being certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Travis’s Version

Randy Travis‘s version of “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” incorporates country music into a gospel song. The track starts with a low, deep, and soft string plucking that goes beautifully well with Travis’s voice. It is followed by another set of strings harmonizing in the background and the harmonica’s first tones. The song also creates a heavenly yet calming feel because the added vocals blend perfectly in the background. “Precious Lord, Take My Hand’s” lyrics ask for guidance from the Lord in times of trouble.

About The Song

Originally written by Thomas A. Dorsey, who wrote the song because of his utmost grief when his wife and infant son died during childbirth. Since the track’s initial release in 1937 by the Heavenly Gospel Singers, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” is now published in over 40 languages and has been recorded by several artists globally like Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, Mahalia Jackson, and Jennifer Hudson lately in 2021.

In 2007, the song became part of the Christian Music Hall of Fame. It was also included in RIAA‘s Songs of the Century.

“Precious Lord, Take My Hand” is one of Randy Travis’s songs that retains the solemnity of the song itself and its message while still nailing the country music vibes.
