Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson’s duet is considered to be among the greatest country duets of all time. “Don’t You Wanna Stay” is a song penned by songwriters Andy Gibson, Jason Sellers and Paul Jenkins in 2009. The song tells the story of a man trying to save his relationship with the woman he loves.

The Making of “Don’t You Wanna Stay”

The songwriters wrote “Don’t You Wanna Stay” at Jenkins’ house. They had some ideas of what to write and they wrote a love song. Gibson was supposed to record the song. However, when they showed the song to Aldean, he became interested in it. “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was meant to be recorded as a solo, not a duet but Aldean thinks that the song was meant to be a duet. Aldean’s first choice was Kelly Clarkson. Therefore, he recorded the song with Clarkson for his studio album My Kinda Party in 2010.  Moreover, the two artists performed the song live on the 44th CMA award show on the same year.

Chart Performance and Awards

Aldean’s single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. In addition, it placed at No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart and the song also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 31. His song was double Platinum certified by RIAA in 2012. Aside from being certified by RIAA and reaching the Billboard chart, “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was nominated and won various awards from different award shows. In 2010, CMT nominated Aldean’s song for Collaborative Video of the Year. Moreover, the song won during the CMA award show for Musical Event of the Year and was also nominated for Single of the Year. In 2011, during the 54th Grammy Award show “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was nominated.

Album

It is not only Aldean’s song that performed well on the chart and gained a lot of attention. His album My Kinda Party also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Album chart. In addition, it peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart. Furthermore, his album was 4x Platinum-certified by RIAA.
