Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker released his first chart-topping single as a solo act titled “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” on May 27, 2008. This was the first time an Afric𝒂n-Americ𝒂n country singer reached the spot since Charley Pride’s “Night Games” in September 1983. It also rose to No. 35 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Rucker wrote the song with Clay Mills for his second studio album, Learn to Live. It became the outset of a remarkable success for the singer. However, he had to overcome racism from the white-dominant culture of country music despite the huge influence of the Black community in the genre. In his interview with ET Canada in 2023, he said, “I had people say to me, to my face, ‘My audience would never accept a Black country singer. That’s something that I was like, ‘Okay, just play the record, let’s see?’ And then they did.”

Evidently, the song sold over a million copies in May 2014. Rolling Stone US even ranked it at No. 174 on The 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, describing it as “a grown-up country anthem that demonstrated how so many of us will get to experience some version of ‘what if things had been different?’ years after an old breakup.”

Meaning Behind the Song

What could’ve been in your past relationship if you stayed?

Darius Rucker sums up the feeling of regret in his mid-tempo ballad “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It.” In the music video directed by Wayne Isham, Rucker depicts a man who has been left by his lover. The beginning paints a picture of seeing the woman he loved in a rearview mirror. At present, each of them already has their separate lives, but they often think about what they left behind. This highlights the grief and nostalgia in carrying the consequences of a romantic split.

His co-writer, Clay Mills, helped in launching a surefire hit for the country singer. The inspiration for the song was from Mills’ personal experience. During the first day, Mills met Rucker for the writing process, he shared how he misses his ex-girlfriend, who he dated for a year. On the day before their meeting, he broke up with her and began second-guessing his decision. Coming up with the phrase “Don’t think I don’t…,” Mills pulled up his guitar and immediately wrote 90 percent of the chorus, which Rucker finished afterward.

Thanks to his effortless, soulful singing, Rucker’s signature hit reached an appreciative audience worldwide, leading him to stardom.

Reminisce for a while and sing along to Darius Rucker’s “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It.”
