Luke Grimes has spent the better part of a decade as Kayce Dutton, and he still will not sit down and watch him.
The Pioneer Woman reported that Grimes avoids seeing himself on screen altogether, even for the big episodes and the finales. In an interview with HeyUGuys, he kept his answer short.
“I don’t watch myself. I won’t watch it,” he said.
He explained that he gets really self-conscious and feels that it affects the work. Talking with People at Allegiant Stadium, he said he does not enjoy watching himself and believes it would actually hurt his process.
Luke Grimes Has Played Kayce Dutton a Very Specific Way Since 2018
Grimes took the role on Yellowstone in 2018 and played Kayce through the show’s run to 2024. Then he carried him into Marshals on CBS, where Kayce and his son, Tate, are living with Monica’s death and Kayce joins a team of U.S. Marshals.
The spinoff debuted in March with strong numbers and was renewed for a second season, and Grimes said he was thrilled that people showed up and seemed to like it.

He told People that his method can change from job to job, and that what helps him find one character might not work on the next. Kayce is a different case after all these years.
“I’ve got a very specific way that I have approached playing Kayce. I’ve been doing it so long now that it takes a little less work to get there at this point,” he said.
Grimes has stayed away from Dutton Ranch too, the Yellowstone spinoff that was also renewed for a second season after a record-breaking ratings debut. He told The Hollywood Reporter why.

“I almost felt like, while we were starting to get into this, watching that might have messed with the tone in my head of what we’re trying to do over here, because they’re very different shows.”
Writing for the second season of Marshals is underway, according to Grimes, and filming is expected to start soon.
When Marshals returns, living rooms full of fans who have followed Kayce since 2018 will be taking in the very scenes the man playing him chose to skip. Luke Grimes says he is ready to “do 20 episodes this year,” and he has no plans to watch himself in any of them.
