Last November 10, 2020, Morgan Wallen unveiled an eight-minute, 17-second cinematic short film for his fan-favorite track “7 Summers” from his second studio album, Dangerous: The Double Album. And not only that, but he also debuted his acting chops, and his performance, as Chris Parton from Sounds Like Nashville said, “spoke quiet volumes.”

Directed by Justin Clough, the short film was set in Nashville, where Wallen played the small-town high school’s baseball pitcher at odds with his father over his future. The hitmaker all too naturally embodied the character who both understood his father’s wish for him to become a baseball star and a man who just wanted to remain in his hometown with his denim-clad girl.

And that story perfectly fitted into the song’s wistful tale of lost love and all the what-ifs in between. It’s like pages and pages of bittersweet journal entries painted into life and compressed into eight minutes of screen time.

True enough, this dreamy, nostalgic track was inspired by true happenings in Wallen’s life. Back in 2013, he got hurt playing baseball and ended going into a community college which was not going all too well. As for his denim-clad girl, Wallen walked through some memories with his high school girlfriend and the things she said to him. There were definitely sad parts, but there were also moments that made him smile thinking about it again, which all translated into the lyrics of the song.

“7 Summers” was written by Morgan Wallen, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne. The singer teased the song’s demo on Instagram after fellow country musician Jake Owens nominated him on the challenge, then officially made it into a single, which was released on August 14, 2020. The song broke several streaming records, earned a top 10 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, and was hailed by Time magazine as one of the 10 Best Songs of 2020.
