Ever since releasing three albums by herself and taking a stab at the televised musical competition Nashville Star, Kacey Musgraves has absolutely established herself as a major voice in country music. Kacey Musgraves songs quickly caught the attention of critics and fans alike, crossing over to a rock audience without playing pop – something that rarely happens in the genre.

1. “Follow Your Arrow”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

It may sound like something from a bumper sticker, but when Musgraves starts singing “Follow Your Arrow,” everything just makes sense. This entertaining ballad finds Musgraves urging her fans to be true to themselves despite the elicit criticism from others.

It was named Song Of The Year at the 2014 CMA Awards.

2. “Merry Go’ Round”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

Released as Musgraves’ debut single, “Merry Go’ Round” was a deeply skeptical observation of life in the American heartland, where couples marry, live, and die – a cycle that goes on and on.

It took home the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2014.

3. “Rainbow”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

Musgraves closed her award-winning album with “Rainbow,” which started as an encouraging reminder to herself and eventually turned into “a message of hope for anyone in the midst of dark times.”

4. “Justified”

From: Star-Crossed (2021)

The mess of healing a broken heart, “Justified” finds Musgraves springing back and forth between resentment and loneliness. The song delves into the consequences of a breakup, with conflicted emotions being the central point.

5. “Biscuits”

From: Pageant Material (2015)

Written by Musgraves with her frequent collaborators Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, this playful ballad inspires listeners to live and let live. The playful metaphors in “Biscuits” contain the anti-negativity theme commonly found in most of Musgraves’ songs.

6. “Space Cowboy”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

In “Space Cowboy,” Musgraves takes a turn from her usual fare as she delivers sorrow and misery. The beautiful, soaring ballad finds the singer saying goodbye to a lover who tells her he needs some space. She realized that there was no more point in chasing after him.

7. “Blowin’ Smoke”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

“Blowin’ Smoke” tells the story of small-town waitresses as they talk about people, smoke, and wait for customers to come in. The main protagonist of the song, Brenda, is a character from Musgraves’ imagination.

8. “Butterflies”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

The moment Musgraves fell in love with her then-husband, Ruston Kelly, she immediately wrote all the love songs she could – this includes “Butterflies,” wherein she channeled that fluttery feeling right back into the romantic lyrics.

9. “Slow Burn”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

The opener to her Grammy Award-winning album Golden Hour, “Slow Burn” appreciates the smaller and finer aspects of life. Musgraves wrote the ballad with the conclusion that nothing needs to be a race to get to the end; instead, she’s joyful to just ride along the way.

10. “Step Off”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

The banjo-laced tell-off ballad is a perfect portrayal of the boldness that Musgraves infuses into all of her tracks. When asked what inspired the cheeky lyrics, the singer revealed that one person in her life at the time was being pretty negative that she started composing such funny little paragraphs.

11. “Keep It to Yourself”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

Sometimes, all you need is to be left alone to move on following a terrible breakup – this is what this song is all about. It tells the tale of a depressed girl trying to get over a broken relationship, which Musgraves co-wrote while going through “a personal down moment and a breakup.”

12. “Dime Store Cowgirl”

From: Pageant Material (2015)

Nothing could be more precise than “Dime Store Cowgirl,” which tells a story that only the country star has lived: the story of her own rise. The song features numerous experiences Musgraves has had being on the road and visiting new places. But despite such success, the chorus revealed that she’s still the same girl from her small hometown of Golden, Texas.

13. “High Horse”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

Reaching No. 39 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40, “High Horse” became Musgraves’s first song to crossover to pop radio. The funky, danceable track finds the country star calling out someone’s too-huge ego and pompous manner.

14. “Golden Hour”

From: Golden Hour (2018)

The title track of her highly acclaimed album, “Golden Hour” pretty much sums up an especially happy time in her personal life, especially marrying Kelly. “It’s just this warm, golden feeling that I’m really happy to have in my life, and I found it to be the perfect title for this record,” Musgraves said.

15. “It Is What It Is”

From: Same Trailer Different Park (2013)

Musgraves revealed that her grandmother calls “It Is What It Is” the “slut song.” It’s about looking for love in all the wrong places.
