While he’s no saint, Blake Shelton songs often share small glimpses of his spiritual life throughout the years. Take, for instance, this hymn-like country ballad “Savior’s Shadow” – which goes even further to highlight his conviction and humility as a guide through trying times in a way that leaves no doubt.

The song was released in 2016 as the second single off his album If I’m Honest. While it debuted at the bottom of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, peaking at No. 50, the somber tune reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Christian Songs chart.

The Story Behind The Song

Written by Blake Shelton along with Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall, “Savior’s Shadow” served as a reminder that his faith has always been strong. It details how he somehow lost faith when his life was filled with turbulence but only ended up gaining even more.

The song also turned out to be a powerful source of strength to Shelton when his marriage to his fellow country star, Miranda Lambert, was on the verge of breaking off. “I was walking around, randomly singing that song to myself,” Shelton said. “And somehow, it would make me feel better.”

But what’s even more interesting is when Shelton revealed that “Savior’s Shadow” came to him in a dream in the summer of 2015. The country star said he woke up and remembered the first verse, which he immediately sang into his phone. He then enlisted the help of Alexander and her husband Randall to finish the tune.

Make sure to listen to “Savior’s Shadow” by Blake Shelton in the video below and watch him take a step back from the pop-tinged tunes as he opts for string-heavy composition on this slow gospel track.
