Up-and-coming Traditional Country Artist Spencer Hatcher Cancels Shows After Losing Mother in Violent Attack

Spencer Hatcher, seen in an earlier reflective moment with his guitar nearby, now faces heartbreak after canceling shows following the tragic loss of his mother in a violent attack.

Spencer Hatcher was ready to play for packed crowds when tragedy kicked down his family’s front door.

The up-and-coming traditional country singer had circled two big dates on his calendar, the VOA Country Music Fest in Ohio and the Rockingham County Fair in his home state of Virginia. Now both shows are off the books, replaced by a family tragedy that’s shaken his world to its core.

On the night of August 3rd, in the quiet Shenandoah Valley just north of Harrisonburg, Spencer’s parents, Holly and Michael Hatcher, were at home when an intruder forced his way in. Investigators say the man, armed with a large knife, fatally stabbed 62-year-old Holly before turning on 65-year-old Michael. Badly injured, Michael somehow fought his way outside, got to his vehicle, grabbed his handgun, and fired one shot that ended the attack. The intruder, later identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker of Maryland, died in the driveway.

“This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random attack,” Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said. Walker had no criminal record, no history of violence, and no connection to the Hatchers. Days before the killing, he rented a campsite at Endless Caverns in New Market and bought a sleeping bag and a large knife at a Walmart nearby. The next day, police found his abandoned vehicle after it had rammed the camp store, but there was no theft and no clue of what was coming.

When first responders reached the Hatcher home just before midnight, Holly was gone, Michael was rushed to the hospital, and Spencer’s life had changed forever.

The Virginia-born artist, signed to Stone Country Records, has been steadily climbing in the country scene. He grew up playing banjo in a family bluegrass band, with his brother Connor singing harmonies, and his sound has earned comparisons to Zach Top and Keith Whitley. Just a week before the attack, he released his latest single, “When She Calls Me Cowboy,” and was set to build on that momentum with his summer shows.

Instead, Spencer took to Instagram to break the news to fans. “It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that due to a monumental loss in our family I must cancel my upcoming shows,” he wrote. “We appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Holly Hatcher wasn’t just Spencer’s mother, she was a beloved teacher who spent 19 years shaping young lives in Rockingham County Public Schools. The district remembered her as someone who “poured her heart into her work” and left a mark on “countless students and colleagues.”

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, though with the suspect dead, no charges will be filed. Michael Hatcher, despite his injuries, has already spoken publicly about the outpouring of love his family has felt since that night. “We’ve cried, we’ve hurt, and we’ve hugged,” he said, “and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us, and between you.”

For now, Spencer Hatcher’s music is on hold, but anyone who’s heard his voice knows this story isn’t over. When he steps back on stage, it will be with a new weight in his songs, carrying the memory of the woman who cheered him on from the very first note.

Because in country music, the show doesn’t just go on, it carries the people you’ve loved with it. Every verse. Every chord. Every night.
