Tim McGraw Says He Passed on “Carrying Your Love With Me” Out of Respect for George Strait

Tim McGraw has never been short on hits. The guy basically owned the ’90s. But even legends have moments they look back on and think, “Damn, that one got away.” And for McGraw, it’s “Carrying Your Love With Me.”

He could’ve had it. The only reason he passed? George Strait had it, too. And Tim wasn’t about to throw hands with The King of Country over a song that already had Strait’s name written all over it.

McGraw dropped this little gem on TL’s Road House podcast with Tracy Lawrence, and it’s one of those behind-the-scenes stories that makes you love country music even more. Because it’s not about egos. It’s about respect.

“I’m not getting in a pissing match with George Strait,” Tim said, dead serious.

Here’s how it went down. One of the songwriters pitched it to Tim. Another pitched it to George. Both artists put it on hold. But once McGraw heard that Strait had it in his sights, he let go. No power plays. No label wars. Just a guy with enough sense to know that some songs are already spoken for.

And that’s the difference between a hit chaser and a lifer.

“Carrying Your Love With Me” dropped in 1997 and immediately staked its claim as one of the decade’s best. Four times Platinum. A Grammy nod. Number one on Billboard. It’s Strait’s third most popular track on Spotify even now, decades later. This song didn’t just land. It stuck.

But imagine Tim McGraw doing it instead. Would it have hit? Sure. Tim could’ve crushed it. But that’s not the point. The point is, he didn’t take the bait. He saw the field, saw the King walking across it, and stepped aside.

That kind of move doesn’t happen anymore. In today’s country landscape, artists would fight over a hook like it’s the last cold beer in the cooler. They’d leak demos. Drop cryptic tweets. Hell, they’d post it on TikTok before the ink dried. Tim McGraw? He just nodded and backed off.

And here’s the best part. The man’s not bitter about it. In fact, he straight-up says it’s one of his favorite George Strait songs ever. No regrets. No backpedaling. Just a deep appreciation for a damn good song that landed in the hands it was meant for.

Most guys would’ve pulled every string they had. Tim just respected the game. And maybe that’s why he’s still here, still touring, still cutting real music after all these years.

Some folks chase hits. Tim McGraw knows when to tip his hat and let the King ride.
