In 1962, country legend George Jones released his rendition of the hit gospel song “Peace in the Valley” as part of his album Homecoming in Heaven.
Written by Thomas A. Dorsey, the song was originally released in 1939 by Mahalia Jackson. It became such a massive hit that the song was among the first gospel recordings to sell one million copies.
“Peace in the Valley” is considered a staple gospel song sung in churches and religious gatherings. So it was no surprise when big names like Elvis Presley, Red Foley, George Jones, and many others released their versions of the song.
Jones’ cover was one of the best in history, and his distinctive voice allowed him to express the message, making it one of George Jones’ amazing hits.
It saved listeners during World War II. In an interview, songwriter Dorsey revealed that the song was written to inspire people to seek a world of peace instead of chaos.
