Jamal Roberts Just Gave Carrie Underwood’s “Undo It” the Redemption It Needed

Jamal Roberts delivers a powerful performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Undo It” on American Idol, leaving Carrie visibly stunned and the crowd on fire.

Carrie Underwood may have sung it first, but Jamal Roberts might have finally made “Undo It” worth a second listen. The 27-year-old P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, marched onto the American Idol stage like a man with something to prove, and in just under three minutes, he flipped one of Carrie’s most criticized singles into a full-blown showstopper.

The song choice didn’t exactly get a standing ovation from fans beforehand. Let’s be honest, “Undo It” has always been a bit like a black sheep in Carrie’s catalog. Critics call it thin on lyrics, heavy on repetition, and about as deep as a kiddie pool. Even some of her biggest supporters skip past it when it pops up on a playlist. But Jamal took that underdog of a track, cracked it open, and pulled out a performance that felt anything but forgettable.

Wearing a black suit and cowboy hat, he stepped onto the Idol stage for Ladies Night looking like a modern-day headliner, not a karaoke contestant. The live band was ready, the backing vocalists were locked in, and when that chorus hit, he went full tilt. His raw delivery gave the track a fresh edge, making it sound more alive than the version that first hit radio back in 2010.

Mentored by Miranda Lambert that week, Jamal brought attitude and polish without slipping into parody. He didn’t just sing the song. He gave it a pulse. When he tossed his hat into the air, the judges and the crowd were all in. Luke Bryan caught it and grinned like he was watching a stadium act. Sitting front and center, Carrie looked genuinely impressed, even while noting he missed a few lyrics. Her verdict was clear: the performance was fun, and it worked.

Lionel Richie said what most people were thinking. “You are mesmerizing.” That’s not a word you toss around for just anyone, especially when they’re covering what many call the weakest single from one of country’s biggest stars.

Of course, not everyone was sold before he hit the stage. Social media was full of skepticism the moment his song choice leaked. Plenty of viewers felt like his voice deserved better material. But by the end of his performance, most of those critics had changed their minds. Some still questioned the pick, but no one could say Jamal didn’t bring it.

There’s something poetic about taking a song that’s been dismissed for years and lighting it up on one of TV’s biggest stages. That’s what Jamal did. He didn’t need a perfect song to shine. He just needed a moment, and he made one.

So, if you’ve always skipped “Undo It,” maybe it’s time to hear it again. Jamal Roberts just gave it a whole new reason to hit replay.
