Released in March 1994, “Foolish Pride” was released by the Grammy award-winning country singer Travis Tritt and delivered a relatable single for lovers going through a complicated relationship with their partners, or dare I say, their own egos.

The critically acclaimed song was recorded for Tritt’s fourth studio album, Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof (1994). The Los Angeles Times author Chris Willman described Tritt’s album “as the modern inheritor of the ‘70s outlaw movement” for his charm and choice of emotional themes for his records. Particularly, the single “Foolish Pride” was described as a powerful ballad by Rolling Stone critic Jim Bessmen. Tritt’s tenderness and compassionate lyrical delivery are at par with country icon Randy Travis.

Some of Travis Tritt’s biggest hits were “Help Me Hold On,” “Best of Intentions,” “Anymore,” and “Can I Trust You with My Heart,” all of which charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts. “Foolish Pride” joined the club when it climbed to No. 1 on the same chart in 1994. It not only peaked at No. 1 on the US Charts but also on Canada Country Tracks RPM.

Meaning Behind the Song

The mid-tempo ballad “Foolish Pride” by Travis Tritt elaborately narrates the story of the aftermath of a couple’s fight. Neither the man nor the woman has the courage to talk to the other first. The woman resists the urge to call the man while the man refuses to apologize. Yet, at the same time, both of them want to fix the relationship but are only driven by their foolish pride. Even though they love each other, their egos have taken over their lives, resulting in a dissolving love.

Directed by Gustavo Garzon, the music video features Tritt as a ghost to a couple who succumbs to their stubbornness. The video shows both parties’ emotional suffering from being apart, but in the end, they choose to leave the relationship unfixed. You couldn’t help but think that if only one of them initiated reconciliation, then maybe the relationship would have been saved.

The song’s honest and straightforward interpretation of a pair’s agony of missing each other due to their unyielding competitiveness in love can be relatable to those enduring complicated relationships out there.
