Leaving an exceptional legacy in the Christian community, the Queen of Gospel Song Mahalia Jackson made her own version of “I Surrender All” by Judson W. Van DeVenter. The song was part of her The Forgotten Recordings album in 2005, which was released thirty-three years after her death. The compilation album consists of 36 songs from the icon.

“I Surrender All” was originally composed by DeVenter in 1896, a former art teacher turned evangelist. After several years of pursuing art, he became an active servant of the Lord and devoted his life to Christian ministry until he was inspired in his meetings at East Palestine and Ohio to write the rousing hymn. Deventer’s life changed when he discovered his passion for singing and surrendered himself to God.

Jackson’s mastery of the art of singing and powerful vocals has been a trademark of hers in the music industry. Her version of the song invokes an unwavering devotion to God. Although the song is only accompanied by simple piano keys, the music icon conveys the message of “I Surrender All” through a soul-stirring delivery; striking enough to pierce anyone’s soul.
