On October 16, 2023, Luke Combs released “Where The Wild Things Are” as the third single from his album Gettin’ Old, which became one of the most successful records of his career.

Unsurprisingly, the song became another hit for Luke Combs. It reached No. 8 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart while also peaking at No. 13 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Meaning Behind The Song

Written by Randy Montana and Dave Turnbull, “Where the Wild Things Are” tells the story of a young man whose free-spirited brother lives his life on his own terms – ditching their hometown to move out West and endlessly chasing adventure.

To him, his older brother is an inspiring force. So, he desires to follow his daredevil brother and decides to join him in California’s sunny paradise. However, the allure fades fast as he realizes that he’s not cut out for the wild, unforgiving lifestyle his brother thrives in.

Undeniably, “Where the Wild Things Are” smoothly joins Combs’ lineup of storytelling tunes. But did you know Combs almost lost this hit song, and it nearly went to a different country music legend?

Montana and Turnbull wrote the song several years before Combs recorded it. It had been floating around town, eagerly waiting for someone to grab hold of it and give it a voice.

While Combs resonated deeply with the story, he wasn’t alone; country star Eric Church also saw the power in this heroic tale. Church “almost cut” the song, but for some unknown reasons, it bounced around for a few years and found its way to Combs.

“I don’t know how that song never gets cut because it’s an awesome, awesome song,” Combs said about “Where the Wild Things Are.”
