In 2009, country singer Darius Rucker released “History in the Making” as the fourth single off his album Learn to Live. It resonated with many fans that it then ranked No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and even reached No. 61 on Billboard Hot 100.

Meaning Behind The Song

Written by Darius Rucker along with songwriters Clay Mills and Frank Rogers, “History in the Making” sings about a man reveling at the beginning of his relationship with his new lover and considering it as a momentous occasion of their lives.

“This could be one of those memories we wanna hold on to, we want to cling to. The one we can’t forget,” the song goes. And like most of Darius Rucker’s songs, his vocal performance is infectious as usual – perfectly blending with the song’s romantic theme.

According to Rucker, the dreamy ballad came to life during a songwriting session where they were left burned out with little to no ideas at all – until Mills came up with “History in the Making,” and began writing it for Rucker.

And the moment Rucker heard the line, “Baby, this could be our last first kiss,” he knew it was going to be a great song. He even relates to it, recalling how he once told his wife he would one day marry her during their first date. While he thinks his move “was such a dork,” indeed, “history is about that moment.”
