Carrie Underwood‘s “Victory In Jesus” is one of the thirteen songs the country superstar included in her new gospel album My Savior – which is currently on the top spot of Billboard’s Top Christian Albums and Top Country Albums chart and at No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200.
Written by Eugene Monroe Bartlett, Sr., “Victory In Jesus” is an enthusiastic nudge of the Lord’s glory, hope in heaven, and the healing ministry of Christ.
Bartlett, Sr. is deemed to be among Southern Gospel Music’s founding fathers. Born on Christmas Eve in 1885, Bartlett, Sr. dedicated his whole life to Jesus. He was known for being a very successful businessman and a great music teacher, traveling the country’s entire southern portion to organize singing schools for anyone that is interested.
Eventually, Bartlett, Sr. invested all of his money to build Hartford Music Company in Hartford, Arkansas – where a lot of composers, vocalists, and musicians got their very first shot in gospel music. By 1923, Bartlett, Sr. had already successfully sold over 15,000 copies of hymn books.
However, in 1939, Bartlett, Sr. sadly suffered a stroke leaving him partially paralyzed and making it impossible for him to perform or travel. He was bedridden for the last two years of his life. In the midst of such miserable conditions, Bartlett, Sr. wrote “Victory in Jesus” – his ultimate yet most beloved song.

The song first appeared in a songbook paperback, “Gospel Choruses.” Since then, millions have sung the song, especially during worship services. It was also recorded by some of the biggest names in gospel music.
It has grown in popularity through the years and was published in several church hymnals, and turned out to be one of the most requested sing-a-longs of all time. So, it was no longer a surprise when the beloved hymn quickly grew into one of the most played among Carrie Underwood’s songs nowadays.
