For their debut album, country music duo Brooks & Dunn immediately served four consecutive number-one singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. And the first of their string of debut hits was “Brand New Man.”

The song was written by the duo themselves and record producer Don Cook and was released in 1991 as the first and title track of their same-titled album. Aside from grabbing number one, it also earned a Grammy nomination. Then, in 2019, they re-recorded the track for their 11th studio album, Reboot, featuring Luke Combs. While the new version wasn’t a chart-topper, it still charted. It peaked at 42 on Country Airplay and nabbed a Top 30 position on Hot Country Songs.

Keith Urban also covered the song once during his The Last Rodeo Tour with “Sound of a Million Dreams” singer David Nail. They definitely nailed it with the help of the audience, who knew the lyrics by heart.

Meaning Behind the Song

“Brand New Man” opens with the explosively dramatic line, “I saw the light, I’ve been baptized / By the fire in your touch and the flame in your eyes.” The narrator then goes on to sing about being born to love again; this time, he’s not who he was before. His transformation is so drastic that he gets the whole town talking.

In the following verses, he details how his life has turned around because of his lover. Before, he had a country mile-wide wild side, and he would burn beer joints down. But now, he has changed his ways. He also used to brag about how no one could tie him down, but then he met her. And now, his heart beats true for her, and he’s not looking back.

Dunn takes the lead for this song, and his and Brooks’ harmony is off the charts. It’s so fun to listen to and will have you smiling for a whole two minutes and 58 seconds. Their performance will also surely get you off your chair and just start dancing.

Brooks & Dunn’s songs went on to make more marks in the genre and the music industry. But “Brand New Man” will always hit differently. Catch Brooks & Dunn singing it in the video below.
