Johnny Cash Preaching the Bible in “The Man Comes Around”

Johnny Cash wrote a song based on The Book of Revelation. This is known to be the last book in the Bible. Written in it is not only the second coming of Christ but also how it’s going to be like. The end of time is perfectly described in the Book. It gives us a picture that will haunt you, and somehow you want to change for the fear of not living a life with God.

A Dream of Johnny Cash

One day, Johnny Cash dreamt of Queen Elizabeth II comparing him to a thorn tree in a whirlwind. This bothered Cash. He wondered what his dream means. Cash found out that the phrase he encountered in his dream has a similarity with that found in the Book of Job.

“Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.”

Therefore, Cash decided to write a song that focuses on the words of the Lord. This then gave birth to his single “The Man Comes Around.”

“The Man Comes Around” Taken from the Bible

If you have read the Bible, you’ll certainly know what book in each stanza of the song is pertaining to. Some parts of Cash’s single points to the Book of Revelation, like when John saw what will happen in the second coming of Christ. Cash also mentioned passages from the Book of Matthew, and Acts.

Johnny Cash’s Recording

This powerful apocalyptic song of Cash was never released as a single. In fact, he recorded the song a long time ago, but have decided to include it on his 2002 album American IV: The Man Comes Around. Even though the song never entered the chart, Johnny Cash’s album scored a spot on the Top Country Albums chart. In addition, it has placed at number twenty-two on the Billboard 200.

The Lesson from the Book of Revelation

Yes, the Book of Revelation and even Johnny Cash’s song may be scary. However, this is what we have to endure. This is what we should face before we can finally live a peaceful and beautiful life in the hands of the Lord. Therefore, if we want to be saved, perhaps at this very moment we must learn from the words of the Lord.
