In 1968, country superstar Conway Twitty released a cover of Merle Haggard’s classic hit song “Mama Tried” as part of his album, Next in Line. 

The album consists of eleven cover songs, and “Mama Tried” is probably the most popular cover. Originally released by Merle Haggard in 1968, the song is simply about a son who admires his mother for staying strong despite the difficulties they face in life—from his father dying to the son’s rebellion, but in the end, at least his “Mama Tried.”

Over the years since its release, artists like The Everly Brothers, Joan Baez, and David Allan Coe have released covers of the song.
