Remember When Kelly Clarkson Faced Backlash for Admitting She Spanks Her Kids?

Kelly Clarkson shares a joyful hug with her two children on stage, years after making headlines for her 2018 comment about spanking, which sparked ongoing debates about parenting styles.

Back in 2018, Kelly Clarkson did something most celebrities tiptoe around. She casually admitted in a radio interview that she spanks her kids. And for a moment, the pop-country superstar found herself right in the middle of a cultural firestorm.

In a chat with 94.1 in Atlanta, Clarkson said what many Southern-raised parents think and still practice. “I’m not above a spanking,” she said, referring to how she disciplines her then 3-year-old daughter, River Rose. “My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life, and I feel fine about it, and I do that as well.” Clarkson, originally from Texas, explained that she warned her daughter before following through and noted that the tactic “really helped.”

Those few candid remarks were enough to spark national headlines and heated debates in parenting circles. The blowback was swift. Critics called her out for normalizing physical punishment, while supporters defended her right to raise her children as she sees fit.

Clarkson didn’t backpedal. She repeated her stance in a separate interview with a Rochester-based radio station, saying she understood the controversy, especially when it comes to parenting in public. “That’s a tricky thing, when you’re out in public, because then people are like, they think that’s wrong or something.” But she stood her ground, adding, “I find nothing wrong with a spanking.”

ABC News reported on the backlash at the time, quoting Clarkson and spotlighting the divide between public opinion and professional guidance. According to a 2016 Gallup poll, 62 percent of American parents approved of spanking. But that was at odds with the advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which strongly discouraged it. The AAP stated that physical punishment may promote aggression in children and become less effective over time.

So why did Clarkson’s comments cause such a stir?

Part of it is that she wasn’t just another celebrity. She was a beloved public figure, a mother of two, a household name thanks to American Idol, and someone people saw as wholesome and relatable. When someone like Clarkson says something controversial about parenting, it resonates far beyond the usual tabloid cycle. It challenges public perception. For some fans, it made her feel more authentic. For others, it was a disappointing revelation.

But it never became a scandal. In fact, Clarkson’s honesty added to her image as someone who speaks her mind without a filter. She wasn’t trying to spark a parenting war. She was just sharing what works in her house, even if it went against the grain.

Years later, her comments still pop up in discussions about parenting styles. Clarkson’s moment of honesty reminds us how much parenting culture has evolved and how much it still hasn’t.

In a world where celebrities often speak in carefully polished statements, Kelly Clarkson’s blunt truth was a curveball. And the fact that it struck such a chord says more about us than it does about her.
