Initially released by Kris Kristofferson in 1970, the piece “Help Me Make It Through The Night” is still famous today. The lyrics speak about a man’s longing for intimacy, making it controversial. Despite that, several artists, like Sammi Smith, Olivia-Newton John, Engelbert Humperdink, and Willie Nelson, still released their versions. Smith’s version bagged the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1972. But what makes Willie Nelson’s version noteworthy?

Willie Nelson’s version “Help Me Make it Through The Night”

“Help Me Make It Through The Night” cover by Willie Nelson was released in 1980.

His version landed in the top five US and Canadian country charts and peaked at the 4th spot on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It also claimed the 1st spot on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

Keeping the message of the song, Nelson’s version had a different style from the original and other covers. First, it boasted the country-laced vocals of Nelson. Second, it had a ballad feel to it, the tempo being slower and softer, as compared to the original Kris Kristofferson version, which was more upbeat.

As to his rendition, fans love it! As one user on YouTube states, “Willie captivates/ embraces every song that he sings…..With such clarity of every word….the beautiful rasp and country twang …..that is displayed in his one of a kind ….Vocals.”
