After Doye released his version, many other artists decided to cover the song, ironically making it land on the Billboard chart. Ernest Tubb‘s cover, to be exact, peaked at no.1 in the chart. Elvis, however, is credited for solidifying the song’s reputation as a rock and roll holiday classic.

It looks at themes like heartbreak, loneliness, and yearning for a far-off love.
