Kelly Clarkson has performed several outstanding song covers, but her live performance of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High On That Mountain” in her show in Nashville is possibly one of her most emotional ones.

Clarkson had the last show of her Stronger tour in Nashville, Tennessee last September 2012, which also happened to be her last show in the North American leg of the tour. During her live shows, the award-winning singer has a habit of taking song requests from her fans, but that night, she took a song request from herself. She chose to perform the eulogic ballad “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” adding that her mother can attest that she sang the song all the time when she was a kid.

Clarkson then dedicated the song to her guitar player’s uncle, who recently just passed away at that time and was also a close friend of hers. Before singing, Clarkson touchingly took a moment to talk to the Lord as she had already started tearing up, but that did not stop her from giving such a powerful performance. She wonderfully sang the song with her guitarist Aven playing the instrumentals, and the performance ended with a big round of applause and praise from her fans.

Vince Gill released the critically-acclaimed “Go Rest High On That Mountain” in 1995. He notably started writing the song after the death of country singer Keith Whitley but only finished writing it following the death of his brother.
