On the afternoon of March 4, 2016, country singer Joey Feek died surrounded by loved ones after a long, public battle with cervical cancer. “My wife’s greatest dream came true today,” Joey’s husband Rory posted on his blog, This Life I Live. He wrote that there’s no more pain for his beloved Joey anymore.

The country star, who was part of the musical duo Joey + Rory, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014 – and it’s a battle she’d fought off and on for nearly two years.

During her final moments, Joey Feek was much more than half of the Grammy-nominated duo Joey + Rory. Her fight against cancer was detailed through a series of heartbreaking updates on social media and emotional posts on her husband’s blog. It was followed by millions of devoted followers that reached far beyond country music.

It was in May 2014 – only a few months after she gave birth to her daughter, Indiana – when Joey was first diagnosed with Stage IV cervical cancer. She underwent surgery and treatment, which the surgeons declared to be a success. The cancer was eliminated with clean margins, and Joey was declared cancer-free.

Sadly, just a year later, it was found out that Joey’s cervical cancer had returned and even metastasized to her colon. This time around, the country star was not getting better despite undergoing radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. A few months later, the cancer was declared terminal.

Though matters seem to be taking a turn for the worse, Joey’s hope never faded. She proved her strength, faith, and bravery to the world.

Joey was only forty years old when she died, but she has truly left behind an immense legacy.
