In 1994, Alison Krauss teamed up with the bluegrass band The Cox Family for a collection of gospel songs called I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. The record touched so many hearts that it won Grammy Awards for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album.

One of the tracks they recorded was the beloved hymn, “I’d Rather Have Jesus” – which was written by Rhea F. Miller as a poem in 1922. Meanwhile, its tune was composed by George Beverly Shea as he sat one evening playing the piano and his mother brought her the tender piece with the hopes that it would change the trajectory of his life.

Indeed, “I’d Rather Have Jesus” inspired George so much. He then started singing them with a tune that seemed to fit the words.

And It Continues To Inspires Many Christians Today With Alison Krauss’ Rendition.

When you talk about the obvious talents of Alison Krauss, you may start to wonder where to begin? Alison Krauss songs did not only win her countless awards, but it lives in the hearts of those who listened to them.

And her rendition of “I’d Rather Have Jesus” is just one of the examples of the contributions she has made to both country and bluegrass music.

It’s amazing how Krauss’ ethereal voice delivers the great message of the song as she weighs her personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ against two specific things: money and possessions. It may sound mellow, but it’s a strong reminder not to fall into the trap of putting material things over God.

Truly the power of this hymn is beyond compare! “I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold. I’d rather be His than have riches untold,” Krauss sings.

Make sure to listen to “I’d Rather Have Jesus” by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family in the video below. It’s the perfect tune for meditation.
