The song was released in May 2023 as the second single off Wilson’s second studio album, Bell Bottom Country. As expected, “Watermelon Moonshine” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, making it the first chart-topper by a solo female artist after two years. It also peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Meaning Behind The Song

Written by Lainey Wilson, Josh Kear, and Jordan Schmidt, “Watermelon Moonshine” is an innocent tale about young love that takes its listeners on a ride through first love’s sweet memories.

The songwriters revealed that the song was inspired by Deana Carter‘s 1996 country hit “Strawberry Wine.” Lainey Wilson said that while there will never be another “Strawberry Wine,” the infectious ballad embodies what country music means to her, and that’s “creating a timeless story that will resonate with people for generations to come.”

The hitmaker also brought the song to life with a cinematic music video that will take you on a nostalgic journey back to the bittersweet memories of teenage years and young love. It stars Rachel Lynn Matthews, who finds herself reminiscing about a previous romance and the boy who stole her heart. Wilson narrates all through the video with her soulful voice, while the lyrics echo the emotions felt by the characters.
