Luke Combs Says Becoming a Dad Feels Like Taking a Punch to the Face

Luke Combs speaks into the mic, opening up about fatherhood and comparing parenting to a knockout punch.

Luke Combs never shies away from the truth, and when it comes to fatherhood, he is putting it in the plainest words possible.

The North Carolina hitmaker, who just announced that he and his wife Nicole are expecting their third child, told Taste of Country Nights that being a dad is like “getting punched in the face.” He was not talking about the sleepless nights or the endless diaper runs, although those certainly play a part. He was making a point about how life shifts instantly and permanently once a child arrives, and you either learn quick or get flattened by the change.

“I feel like everybody told me all the stuff, but it is like you cannot really understand it until you live it,” Combs explained. “It is like getting punched in the face. They can tell you about it all you want, dude, and then you have the kid, and then it is a whole different ballgame.”

The analogy came after Combs was asked about the one time he actually got punched in the face. He admitted that moment taught him plenty, and becoming a parent has a similar effect. The comparison echoes that infamous Mike Tyson line that says everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Combs sees parenting through that lens. You can read all the books, get all the advice, and watch all the videos, but the second that baby shows up, everything changes.

Combs and Nicole already know a thing or two about adapting. Their first son, Tex Lawrence, was born in June 2022. A little more than a year later, they welcomed Beau Lee in August 2023. Now baby number three is due this winter, and the couple is leaning into the chaos with humor and heart. Nicole announced the news with a sweet Instagram video featuring sonogram images and Combs’ unreleased ballad “Days Like These,” writing, “Third time’s a charm! Baby #3 coming this winter.”

Country stars from Jordan Davis to Bailey Zimmerman filled the comments with congratulations, which shows just how loved this family is within the Nashville community.

But fatherhood has not just made Combs busier at home. It has also reshaped his career. In 2025, he pressed pause on a heavy tour schedule so that he could stay closer to Nicole and the boys. For a man who has racked up 19 number-one hits in less than a decade, that decision said plenty. His music might be dominating the charts, but his heart is rooted in his family.

Fans cannot help but wonder if the Combs household will stop at three kids or if they will end up with a crew as big as Thomas Rhett’s. Combs has not said either way, but judging by the grin on his face every time he talks about being a dad, it is clear he is built for the ride, however long it goes.

It is no surprise, then, that his songs have started to hit differently. Tracks like “Love You Anyway” and “Forever After All” already carried deep emotion, but fatherhood adds another weight to the words. And when he sings about life’s hard knocks, fans know he is not just talking about bar fights or heartbreak. He is talking about the wild, exhausting, beautiful storm that comes with raising kids.

So yes, Luke Combs says being a dad is like getting punched in the face. But the way he lights up when talking about Tex, Beau, and now baby number three proves that sometimes the hit is worth taking.
