Kacey Musgraves gave Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon” an airy, feminine twist, and we can’t stop listening to it.

In 2019, Brooks & Dunn’s dropped their duet album called Reboot. It is filled with reimagined versions of their twelve classic songs with the help from other country music artists like Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett, Ashley McBryde, Kane Brown, and more.

Of course, an easy standout is the addition of Kacey Musgraves to the duo’s 1992 hit “Neon Moon.” The country superstar lent her bright voice to contrast beautifully with Brooks & Dunn’s masculine vocals.

“She came in with such a different progressive twist, and the song still stood up,” Dunn told Billboard about Musgraves’ contribution to the album.

Well, the song must really be one of Musgraves’ favorites. She also performed “Neon Moon” on several dates at her Oh, What a World: Tour from 2018 to 2019. On one occasion, Musgraves invited the legendary duo to perform the song with her during her show at the Ryman Auditorium.

Rather than an exact remake, Musgraves took the lead, while golden-throated Dunn supplied lower harmonies. The performance was so great it brought the crowd on their feet.

The Song For Every Brokenhearted

Written by Ronnie Dunn, “Neon Moon” tells the tale of a man feeling brokenhearted after the woman he loves left him. He got a table of two at a rundown bar where he sits alone, thinking of how he lost his significant other. But most notably, he found himself spending most of his nights finding some comfort from “the light of a neon moon.”

“I spend most every night, beneath the light of a neon moon. If you lose your one and only, there’s always room here for the lonely. To watch your broken dreams dance in and out of the beams of a neon moon,” the song goes.

It was originally released by the duo Brooks & Dunn in 1992 as the third single from their debut album Brand New Man. “Neon Moon” became their third consecutive No. 1 single on US Hot Country Songs charts. It also peaked at No. 1 on Canada Country Tracks charts.

With Kacey Musgraves’ addition to the song, it quickly turned the barroom weeper into pulsing, chillwave honky-tonk, reminding you that perhaps things will all just turn out fine in the end.
