Kacey Musgraves was onstage in Dallas on Sunday, October 11, when she booed the fact that the next day was Monday.
Then she caught herself, remembered it was a holiday and asked the crowd whether it was Columbus Day.
Fans shouted back “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” and she agreed with them. Then she kept going.
“Obviously f**k Columbus. Literally the l𝐚mest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser,” she said onstage at American Airlines Center.
She followed it by calling Christopher Columbus a loser one more time and telling him they hated him. The show was part of her Middle of Nowhere tour, the second of two back-to-back nights at the arena.
The Dallas Show Closed Out Kacey Musgraves’ Texas Run, and She Has Spoken Her Mind Onstage Before
Dallas wrapped a five-night Texas stretch for Kacey Musgraves, with stops in Houston, Dallas and Austin, and the Texas-born singer made it clear what the city meant to her.
“I’m counting these as my hometown shows, by the way,” she told the crowd.
The Sunday show also brought out the Mariachi Brothers, teen musicians once held in ICE detention, according to the Dallas Observer.
Columbus Day marks the day Christopher Columbus arrived in America in 1492, and it is still a federal holiday. In 2021, President Biden issued a proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same date.
Fans who have followed Musgraves have seen her speak her mind before. Some country stations kept “Follow Your Arrow” off the air years ago, and in 2019 she spoke about gun control during her Lollapalooza set, the same weekend as the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.
Kristi Noem Borrowed a ‘Choosin’ Texas’ Line, and Kacey Musgraves Answered
Musgraves had a guest in the building Sunday night, Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, who shared photos from the show and thanked her on X for having him.
Kristi Noem, the former Homeland Security secretary whom President Trump fired in March, reposted those photos on Monday, October 12, with a jab at Musgraves.
“I’ll take @ellalangleymsic over Kacey Musgraves any day. And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico,” Noem wrote in a post on X.
Her line borrowed from Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” the song that broke Mariah Carey’s Billboard record for most weeks at No. 1. Paxton is Talarico’s Republican opponent in the Senate race.
Musgraves answered Monday afternoon in a post of her own.
“I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.”
The reply pointed back to Noem’s book, No Going Back, where she wrote that she shot her 14-month-old wirehair pointer, Cricket. Noem has defended that decision on X, saying her family loves animals but tough decisions like that happen all the time on a farm.
Kacey Musgraves went to Dallas to finish her Texas run with what she called her hometown shows, and by the afternoon of Columbus Day itself, the argument had moved to X over Ella Langley, Ken Paxton and a dog named Cricket.
