Nicole Kidman was ready to fight for her marriage, but Keith Urban walked away.

The news of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s separation has shaken both Hollywood and the country music world. After nearly two decades together, the pair split earlier this year, and according to multiple reports, the decision was not mutual. Sources close to the couple reveal that while Urban moved out of their Nashville home and set up his own place, Kidman was holding the family together and doing everything she could to save the marriage.

“She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” one insider told PEOPLE. Kidman’s sister Antonia has been her anchor, with the entire Kidman family rallying behind her. Their daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, have been staying primarily with their mother during this turbulent stretch.

What makes the timing even more striking is that only in June, Kidman marked their 19th wedding anniversary with a black-and-white photo of the two of them and wrote, “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban.” Urban, however, stayed silent and focused on his tour and his music. The contrast between her heartfelt message and his absence online now looks like a glaring sign of the growing distance.

The cracks had shown earlier in the year. In July, Urban abruptly cut off a radio interview in Australia when asked about Kidman’s romantic scenes with Zac Efron in her Netflix film A Family Affair. Not long after, it was revealed that Kidman had applied for residency in Portugal without including Urban’s name. At the time, it was brushed off as a scheduling issue, but now it feels more like a signal of separation.

Their marriage has weathered storms before. When they wed in 2006, Urban was battling substance abuse issues, and Kidman staged an intervention only months into their marriage. He entered rehab and later credited her with saving his life. Over the years, he described her as his “deep, deep love” and the person who changed everything for him. Even as recently as 2024, he praised her in front of a national audience, calling her the embodiment of love and resilience during the AFI Tribute to Nicole Kidman.

That makes this ending even harder to process for fans. For almost 20 years, Kidman and Urban seemed like proof that Hollywood and country roots could blend into something lasting. They built a sprawling real estate empire together, juggled their careers across continents, and raised two daughters while keeping their bond at the center, or so it seemed.

Now, Urban is pressing forward with his “High and Alive” world tour, which is set to continue through 2026, while Kidman has turned her attention to family and filming Practical Magic 2. Friends say she is leaning on faith and family while adjusting to life without the man she once called the love of her life.

There is no official divorce filing yet, which leaves a flicker of hope for reconciliation. However, the reality is that Urban has stepped away while Kidman has been left fighting for what they built. For her, this is not just a separation. It is the unraveling of what she once described as her greatest blessing.

And that makes this chapter one of the most heartbreaking endings country fans and Hollywood watchers have seen in years.
