Authorities say the man suspected of killing Charlie Kirk is now in custody after being turned in by his own family.

On Friday morning, President Donald Trump confirmed during an appearance on Fox & Friends that the suspect accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been apprehended. Trump explained that the arrest was not the result of a standoff or chase but instead came when the suspect’s father, with the guidance of a minister connected to law enforcement, convinced him to surrender. “The father convinced the son, this is it,” Trump said, adding that the man is now being held at police headquarters.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk during his “Prove Me Wrong” campus tour on Wednesday left the country in shock. Kirk was addressing students under a white tent at Utah Valley University when a single shot struck him in the neck. Panic followed immediately as students screamed and ran for safety, and within moments, one of the most influential young conservative voices of his generation was gone.

Investigators had shared surveillance images on Thursday of a young man climbing down from a rooftop near the scene. They later confirmed that they recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle believed to be the weapon used in the attack. While the footage and weapon provided critical leads, it was ultimately the decision of the suspect’s family, working with a minister, that brought the case to an end.

Trump has called the incident a “political assassination” and praised the role of faith and family in helping bring the suspect into custody. He also emphasized that he expects the state of Utah, where capital punishment remains legal, to seek the death penalty. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has already indicated that prosecutors are likely to pursue that path.

Officials have not yet released full details about the suspect, who is believed to be college-aged. More information is expected later today when the FBI and local law enforcement hold a formal briefing to update the public on the investigation.

Meanwhile, Charlie Kirk’s death continues to be mourned across the country. His body was flown home to Arizona on Thursday aboard Air Force Two with Vice President JD Vance, who escorted the return. Trump confirmed that he will attend Kirk’s funeral, saying, “He should not be having a funeral right now. He should be out there in front of people. He loved doing it, he was so good at it.”

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Lawmakers and public figures from both parties expressed outrage, with many describing the shooting as vile and unacceptable. Even some of Kirk’s fiercest critics acknowledged that the violence represented a dangerous new chapter in America’s escalating political tensions.

Charlie Kirk was the co-founder of Turning Point USA and a leading figure in mobilizing young conservatives. Trump credited him with energizing youth voters in a way that had not been seen before in Republican politics, calling him “great, and even legendary.” Kirk’s work on college campuses and his strong presence on social media platforms gave him a unique voice among younger generations. His mission was always to promote debate and conversation, warning often that when dialogue ends, violence begins.

Now, after days of grief and fear, the suspect is in custody. The decision of a father and a minister to step in does not undo the loss, but it does offer a measure of justice in the wake of tragedy.
