First released in 1965 for his third album – and first under RCA Victor – Country Willie: His Own Songs, Willie Nelson’s “My Own Peculiar Way” showcased his immense talent in introspective narration and plays in word rhythms and sounds. Then, it was re-released in 1969 as the title track of his same-titled ninth studio album, popularly marked by the arrival of his Martin classical “gut-string” guitar named Trigger.

While the song didn’t achieve any commercial success, it earned a special place in the hearts of fans.

Meaning Behind The Song

Produced by Chet Atkins, “My Own Peculiar Way” delved into the themes of self-expression and individuality, with its lyrics sharing Willie Nelson’s unorthodox perspective and approach to societal norms.

First, love doesn’t come with an instruction manual everyone must follow. Sure, there are conventional ways to show love, but it’s ultimately different for different people. And more importantly, being different doesn’t mean that love is not true.

In the first verse of the song, the protagonist thanked their lover for choosing to embrace them and their peculiar ways. Then, in the second verse, they told them never to doubt their love, with Nelson singing, “My mind could never stay too long away from you / Because I love you in my own peculiar way.” Finally, in the last verse, they reminded them to let no one ever tell them their love was untrue.

Second, it also sends the powerful message to keep being true to oneself. And surely someone will come their way who’d accept them for who they are.

This narrative was delivered in such a soulful manner, with the song’s musical elements backing up Willie Nelson’s distinctive vocal style. The song had a laid-back melody and a simple arrangement, with subtle harmonies adding depth to the overall sound and enhancing the emotional resonance of the lyrics.

“My Own Peculiar Way” was written by Willie Nelson himself. Nelson is renowned for his songwriting prowess, penning many hits and songs for other artists. His distinctive style and introspective lyrics showcased in this track have made him a legendary figure in country music.

In today’s age, which manufactures even the concept of individuality, maybe try listening to an older message of identity with Willie Nelson’s “My Own Peculiar Way.” Check it out below, and if you have time, we recommend this list of Willie Nelson tunes
