Uplifting Lyrics
Steve Robson and Jason Sellers wrote “I Won’t Let Go” together. American country music group, Rascal flats recorded and released it in January 2011. It is their second single from the band’s seventh studio album ‘Nothing Like This’ as well as their 28th single overall. The song had positive reviews from critics who praised Gary LeVox’s vocal delivery for showing more maturity. The song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart and reached number 31 on the Hot 100. It was Platinum-certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. It also succeeded to chart in Australia and Canada, placing 39th and 68th respectively. The supplementary music video for the song Deaton-Flanigen Productions project and is footage of a live performance.
Robson had already started the song when he and Sellers got together to write it. Sellers told Country Weekly that he thought Robson’s standing lyrics were “inspired“, and he would pen a song with an “uplifting lyric“. He said they purposefully did not outline the song’s character targeting various situations to send the message to.
“This could be something you’d say to someone in the family that’s a soldier, fighting overseas… or to your mom, dad, wife or husband. I felt it could also be God saying it to someone.”
Ben Foster of “The 1-to-10 Country Music Review” scored the song five stars out of ten, saying,
“Their performance is solid, and the harmonies are there, so “I Won’t Let Go” is easy on the ears.”
In Dedication to Hurricane Harvey Victims
In an August 2011 ‘Good Morning America’ episode, Rascal Flatts dedicated a performance to victims of the catastrophic Hurricane Harvey. During the band’s touching performance, photos of Harvey survivors were shown onscreen. Rascal Flatts performed as part of a special fundraising edition of the show called Disney’s Day of Giving with all proceeds slated for Harvey relief. A big-hearted group of celebrities was on hand answering donation calls, raising more than $5 million at press time. Through the group’s composure, we can feel how sincere they delivered the song with its message,
“And I will dry your eyes
I will fight your fight
I will hold you tight
And I won’t let go.”
The lines remind us of God’s promise as stated in the scriptures,
“I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.”
(John 14:18)
