Music is an instrument that mysteriously touches people’s emotions and lives. It creates a spirit that sways anyone to different moods. Music confronts the whole person- his mind, heart, and will. It demands a response from the receiver as it brings you to a familiar or unfamiliar atmosphere. As we all can attest, music has the power to instruct the mind, inspire our emotions, or challenge our will.

But can music really affect our faith? Our Christian life?

What the Bible says about music

The New and Old Testament have numbers of verses that touch on music. The most famous musicians in the Bible is King David. He primarily used music to worship God.  The first reference to music is found in Genesis 4:21.

“His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.”

Throughout the scripture, music is a gift or a blessing coming from God has been highlighted. It is through this blessing that we can express praise and worship to God since it has the capacity to mirror what we truly feel inside.

Music and the Bible

Music is said to be one of the most divisive and controversial issues in Christian life. The questions and confusions lie on what kind of music Christians should surround themselves with. Churches face similar challenges in the field of worship and music, especially in this generation.

The Bible did not condemn any particular style of music. It never declared that this or that kind of particular instrument is ungodly. There is not a single verse in the Bible that says any particular style of music to be outside of God’s will.

So as Christians, what should we consider the kind of music that we listen to?

The answer is simple. THE MESSAGE OF THE SONG.

Some music often promotes immorality and violence. Some even stimulate anger, malice, and sexual misconduct. Obviously, these songs glorify what opposes God, and a Christian should not listen to it.

Philippians 4:8 gives us a clear guide for choosing music:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” 

Whatever you allow occupying your mind will sooner determine your speech and action. So in conclusion, the best kind of music is that which praises and glorifies God. Again, it is the lyrics that will determine whether the song is good for your spirit or not. If it leads you to anything that displeases God, avoid it immediately.
