“One By One”

Today, we listen to Kitty Wells and Red Foley’s first and only No. 1 song together, “One By One.” The song tells a story of a person who expresses how he/she felt when the person they love left them. The narrator of the song seems to be extremely hurt by her lover. Her lover lied to her and broke all the promises they made together. Now, she is left alone in a situation she has to fix all by herself.

“My plans and hopes have tumbled down

My castle of dreams plunged to the ground

How can you face me after what you’ve done.”

Moreover, she constantly thinks how come he is able to sleep well at night or look at her like nothing happened. This thought bothers her a lot.

“You’ve shattered my dreams one by one….. How can you go to sleep at night

Don’t know memories make you long for daylight.”

This is one of Kitty Wells and Red Foley’s duet together. Wells’ voice perfectly fits with this song, none of them overpower each other. The simplicity of the songs’ melody coupled with the lyrics made the song worth remembering.
