Relive Bad-Ass Waylon Jennings & Johnny Cash’s Duet

If Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash would be a country duo, their success would be undeniable, unthinkable and all those adjectives that would say that they are not meant to be a duo since that would mean more collaborations than solo singles that we enjoyed today. That does not mean they cannot share a stage. In fact, these two have the longstanding and probably most genuine friendship in the history of country and that is much evident whenever they sing together. They have also been roommates in another period of time while they have formed a formidable group called The Highwaymen.

One of their most notable collaborative songs is no other than There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang.

There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang, Johnny Cash ft Waylon Jennings

Written by Hal Bynum and Dave Kirby, There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang was recorded by American country music artists Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. It was released in May 1978 as the second single from the album I Would Like to See You Again. The song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

The song is written and sung from the perspective of a prison inmate, writing back home to his family. He tells of the lessons he’s learned while incarcerated. The video below declares a true form of country outlaw that was well cemented by Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings respectively. How blessed are to have these talented humans that gave as godly performances such as like this?

There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang Lyrics

Bet it ain’t a rainin’ back home bet your sister’s still on the phone
Bet mama’s in the kitchen cookin’ fried chicken wishin’ that I hadn’t went wrong
Oh, but mama don’t you worry everything’s gonna be alright
They’re teachin’ us a lot of new things in here.

There ain’t no good in an evil hearted woman
And I ain’t cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don’t go writin’ hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain’t no good chain gang.

Papa’s readin’ yesterday’s mail wishin’ that the hay was all baled
I bet that he’s a wishin’ we could go fishin’
Stead of me sittin’ here in this ol’ damned jail.

There ain’t no good in an evil hearted woman
And I ain’t cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don’t go writin’ hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain’t no good chain gang.

No, there ain’t no kinda good in an evil hearted woman
And I ain’t cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don’t go writin’ hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain’t no good chain gang…
