Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line” Tells Love Story that Almost Didn’t Happen

Johnny Cash's “Walk the Line” Tells Love Story that Almost Didn't Happen 1

You all probably heard about or know of one of the greatest love stories in the history of Country Music. I am talking about Johnny Cash and June Carter’s story.

Today, I would like to talk about the song Walk the Line that he composed and what it means.

First of all, before their great love story happened, there was Vivian Liberto. Johnny Cash married her, his first wife when he was 23. However, while on tour, he met a temptation named  June Carter. That led him to write the song “Walk the Line”. Let’s take a look at the lyrics first then figure it out.

“I Walk The Line”

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for you
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I’ve known proves that it’s right
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

You’ve got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can’t hide
For you I know I’d even try to turn the tide
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

Alright now, looking at the lyrics, it seems to me that he is trying to take a hold of himself because he is falling in love already. Walk the line actually means to maintain a balance between one extreme and another, to behave and abide by moral standards. Follow the rules!

Then, this song is a proclamation of fidelity to her wife Vivian. However, we all know how it ended. To give Johnny the credit and the benefit of the doubt, at least we can say that he did try his best but I guess the heart wants what it wants.

Watch out for the next article I’ll be writing about the movie “Walk the Line”.

Feel free to leave your comments ya’ll! Enjoy the video too.
