Looking back, country music was not just limited to the music industry alone. In fact, it has also been involved in the filmography where quite a number of western films have used country music as their soundtrack.
Moreover, many country artists have had lived a full and wonderful life. Hence, “biopics” or biographical movies were specially made for them. Such is the case of the “Man in Black” – the great Johnny Cash.
On this day (Jan. 31st) in 2006, Cash’s biopic titled “Walk the Line” has drawn attention in the Academy as it pulled in five Academy Award nominations. Being nominated in these kinds of award such as the Oscars is already a great achievement.
“Walk the Line:” The Oscar Nominations
Although the shadow of “Brokeback Mountain” loomed large during that time, “Walk the Line” was left unfazed, receiving nominations it deserved. The nominations it coveted include Best Actor and Actress for Joaquin Phoenix (Cash) and Reese Witherspoon (June Carter Cash), respectively. In addition, the film is nominated for Best in Costume Design, Best in Film Editing, and Best in Sound Mixing.
While the film earned five dashing nominations, it coveted only one with Witherspoon winning the Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Meanwhile, “Brokeback Mountain” led with a total of eight nominations. These include Best Picture and Best Score for composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
While this is not the first time a country music film earned such nominations, it is also fully remembered that Dolly Parton pulled in her Best Original Song Oscar nomination for her “Transamerica” song “Travelin’ Thru.” Also previously, she was nominated for her theme to the 1980 film “9 to 5,” which she also co-starred.
