Go Rest High On That Mountain

Gill wrote the song after the untimely death of country music superstar Keith Whitley. He wasn’t able to finish the song for a few years until his brother died. He gathered the grief he felt from his losses and put it in a song.

“Go Rest High on That Mountain” became a major hit upon its release in 1995. It also garnered CMA’s song of the Year in 1996.

Gill set eyes of the crowd in tears when he performed the song at George Jones funeral on May 2, 2013.

It was a superior performance that wasn’t witnessed before, so to speak.
