Oklahoma native and singer-songwriter Vince Gill has been known for his distinct husky voice with a touch of a classic tune. He is one of the most sought-after country music artists whose career skyrocketed in the 1990s. Until now, his music continues to inspire a lot of people and do justice to what country music really is.
Among his released hits that went successful include the all-time classic “Go Rest High on that Mountain“, “When I Call Your Name”, “I Still Believe in You“, “Look at Us”, and “Whenever You Come Around” to name a few. In fact, he even had a duet with two of the most famous country music female superstars, Dolly Parton in “I Will Always Love You”, and Reba McEntire in “The Heart Won’t Lie“.
In 1994, Gill released a single that he would not have thought be a chart-topper. The song was “What the Cowgirls Do.” Read to know more about this hit.
About the Song
Released in 1994, “What the Cowgirls Do” is a country song performed and recorded by Vince Gill. He co-wrote it with friend Reed Nielsen. The three-minute song was officially released on July 4, 1994, as part of his sixth studio album, When Love Find You. American record producer and pianist Tony Brown produced it under MCA Records. Gill actually recorded it in 1993 but it was just released a year after.
“What the Cowgirls Do” first entered the music charts just a week after its release. It ranked 71st on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks that time. Moreover, it almost became one of the best country songs in 1994 after it was stuck at no. 2 at its peak on the Billboard Hot Country Songs. Nonetheless, it was announced the best in Canada in the same year. It placed no. 1 on the RPM Country Tracks.
Furthermore, the song was also one of the best songs at the end of the year 1994. It placed no. 8 in the year-end charts on the Billboard Country Songs. Meanwhile, it went to no. 6 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks in its year-end charts.
In fact, Billboard magazine correspondent Deborah Evans Price praised Gill for the song. She noted in her review that the song contains an
“effortless groove and Gill’s snappy Telecaster licks.”

What Vince Gill Has to Say
As a singer-songwriter and musician, Gill exudes a great mixture of versatility coupled with virtuosity. With this, he has earned a great deal of respect from his fans and co-artists alike. His success definitely reflects the passion he pours to every song he produces and performance he does. With all these fame and limelight he has, none of these seems to have gone to his head. Gill is still the humble guy who shows nothing but kindness to everyone.
In an interview with the LA Times, Gill revealed about performing in front of an audience. He said:
“I certainly don’t go out of my way to sell that to people, I think sometimes people take their success and their career and their whole deal way too serious. I really don’t. I’m still just a guitar player, in my mind.”
“I think that just comes from me being secure about myself, I wasn’t any different 10 years ago or 20 years ago, I just try to be normal. I like people. I’m approachable. It’s not a conscious effort to be a certain way. I just am.”
On the other hand, Gill admitted that there are sides of him that the public doesn’t see:
“I have drive and ambition. There are things that I’m intense about. I get on the guys if they’re not playing as good as they can and should. I want things to be the best. I’m a perfectionist. I want everyone else to be equally committed. I have a temper that shows up once in a while.”
